Brindusa Burrows
I work in the liminal space between the human and the more-than-human, at the threshold where bodies, materials, and living systems meet, overlap, and become indistinguishable from one another. It is in that space that I explore the question: what does it mean for me to be nature? Not in it. Not in relation with it. But be it.
My practice is grounded in research and materiality. I primarily print, draw, and create installations, working with what the natural world offers: bark, leaf, branch, wood, moss, my hands and feet.
Central to this practice is Stacy Alaimo's concept of transcorporeality: the understanding that bodies — human and more-than-human alike — are not bounded, self-contained entities but porous, relational, continuously exchanging with the world around them.
Meditation, trance, and other primary and secondary research inform my processes.
Brindusa Burrows is a visual artist based in Val-d'Illiez, in the Swiss Alps. Her practice moves between printmaking, drawing, installation, and sculpture, centred on the human–more-than-human continuum and explored through direct engagement with natural materials — bark, stone, leaf, and a 268-year-old beech tree used as a printing matrix.
Her ongoing body of work (H)Être (2025–), developed in response to the felling of that beech tree in her village, has been exhibited in Switzerland and presented at residencies in Italy. Other bodies of work include the Méditations series, the Lumières and Viewfinder macro-photography and print works, and Il Portone, a large-scale installation made during a residency in Verona.
Burrows holds a Diploma of Higher Education (First Honours) in Creative Arts from the Open College of the Arts (UK). She is affiliated with the Musée des Artistes Femmes, Lausanne, and has received the Luxembourg Art Prize's Certificate of Encouragement five consecutive years (2021–2025). Teaching — through drawing workshops and her role at the Geneva Graduate Institute (IHEID) — is an extension of the same sensory, material attention that grounds her studio work. She is a TEDx speaker.
